TWO YOUTHS AND A SADDLE

The business at the Magistrate's Court yesterday waß dealt with by Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M. John A. Murphy and William Alexander Matthews were jointly charged with tho theft of a saddlo valued at £5, the property of TVllllara Howard, butcher, of Island Bay. Mr. 0. A, li. Treadwcll appeared for Murphy. Tho facts were that Murphy borrowed tho saddle which he promised to return promptly, but instead of doing so, he lent it to Matthews. Tho two of them subsequently rodo away from Wellington to Martiuborough, Matthews using tho borrowed saddle. Tho two young fellows spent a fortnight in tho township, and finding; themselves Bhort of money sold the horso and saddle for £4, A saddle was produced in Court which Matthows Bald was tho saddle that was Bold, and the saddlo that was borrowed from Howard. The latter said the saddle waa not the ono that he lent Murphy. Matthews admitted that ho sold Ins horse and the borrowed saddle for £4. and when he learned that he waa likely to get into trouble, ho re-purchased tho saddle for *-. The Magistrate convicted the .two men. and said that Matthews hadJbeon frank about the matter, and he would therefore mako a distinction between tnem.
