WELLINGTON ACCOUNTANT STUDENTS' SOCIETY
The final meeting for this session of the above society was held at Accountants' Chambers last evening, -when- Mr. Charles Bowden presided over a large attendance. The principal business of the evening was a lecture bv the president of the society, Mr. Ernest W. Hunt, F.P.A. (N.Z.), on "The Detection and Prevention of Fraud in Accounts." The lecturer divided his Bub.iect under two main headings, viz.: falsification on the part of directors or other controlling heads' of companies or public bodios. by manipulation of tho accounts under their control, for tho purpose of personal' gain, and falsification of accounts by employees to avoid tho discovery of defalcations which had been committed by them. Tho importanco of a thorough system of internal check was strongly emphasised, and in .this connection it was pointed out how important it was tliat every employee should have an annual holiday. Tho lecturer also stressed the fact that it was more important for an auditor to prevent fraud than to detect .it after it had occurred. After dealing with a. great number of technical points, illustrated by examples from actual practice, Mr Hunt pointed out tho importance of the human element and tho necessity of character study on the part of the auditor. At tho conclusion of his address Mr. Hunt was asked many auostion by members of tho audience, and a valuable discussion ensued. Tho meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the chair.
