FINANCIAL CRISIS IN CUBA
BUSINESS AT A STANDSTILL. New York, October 14. Tho Now York "Times" correspondent at Havana states that, despite various proposals to remedy the financial situation in Cuba, businoss.remains at a standstill. Many firms aro laying off men, because they fear that they cannot meet the pay rolls.. It is feared that, no ono will be able to pay tho employees if the moratorium continues for fifty days; Tho .drop in sugar is considered to be only one element of .the situation. number of firms have repudiated their rice contracts, and' wild speculations in other commodities,- notably flour, are factors in the situation, which is considered to bo most serious.—Aus.-N.Z.
