COST OF BREAD PRODUCTION
I FEATHERSTON AND TRENTHAM | CAMPS. The cost! of broad production in Featherston and Trentham Camps respectively during the whole period of the operation of th» bakeries there formed the subject of a return furnished to the House of Representatives yesterday. The figures set forth were as follow: — Average cost per lb. of bread produced: Featherstpn, 1.756 d.; Trentham, 2.207& Average number of journeymen bakers employed who received full tradesmen's wages: Featherston, 5; Trentham, 6; capital expenditure on installation: Fear therston, JEBSO; Trentham, .£1000; cost of flour and other food commodities used: Featherston, ,£19,860; Trenthaim, .£15.548; cost of fuel: Featherston, .£695; 'lrentham, jeiS67; all other charges: Featherston .£5100; Trentham, .£6297. Estimated total amount of saving achieved by tlw Defence Department by installing its own bakeries (to May 31, 1920), iIO.OSI lis. Id. Footnotes to the return state: "Fear therston Camp bakery closed December 10, 1919. The above sum of .£IO,OBI was actually 6&ved to the /Department, but if overhead charges for management, handling, transport, light, water, interest on capital, depreciation, insurance against accident, etc., rent,, etc., were made a charge against this account, which they are not,, the net cost of bread would be increased, and it !s estimated that thfi saving would be reduced to about <£2500 or probably less." ,
