DETERIORATED MEAT

MINISTER OBTAINING A REPORT.

The refusal of the refrigerating engineer of the AVhito Star steamer Runic at Lyttelton to accept delivery of a cargo of meat 011 the grounds of its deterioration and tendency towards mouldiness was referred to the Prime Minister iu tlie Ho iiie of Representatives yesterday afternoon by Mr. G. Witty (Riccarton). It was suggested by Mr. Witty that it would be a good thing if, the meat 111 store were examined so that it should not bo sent down to the ships if it had deteriorated, and so that the public might know how much damaged meat therri was. in store. He also asked, whether it would not be better to sell the meat in New Zealand at cheap rates rather than let it go bad in store. Mr. Mtisssy said that ho had not been able to procure details of what had happened in this matter. The Mimsler of Agriculture lmd instructed tho Director of tho Department to telegraph to Canterbury for full particulars When theI}*1}* arrived no doubt tho Minister would be glad to furnish the information to tho House. He did not think it would be a proper thins to offer any criticisms in the absence of those particulars. .
