An old resident of Napier, Mr. Samuel Carnell, died yesterday afternoon, aged 88 years. Deceased, who was Mayoi of Napier in 1904 and 1905, was born iu Nottinghamshire and readied Auckland in the ship Caduceus in 1862. He resided in Auckland till 1865, when he went to the goldfields-.at Hokitika. Latci he went into business as a photographei at Nelson and Auckland, and removed to Napier in 1809. Deceased won the Napier 6eat in the Liberal Party's interest in 1891. He was also' a member of local bodies and was a Freemason—Press Assn.
Mr. H. Hamilton, director of tho Vacuum Oil Company of Australasia, who lias been visiting Wellington, left, for Auckland by yesterday's express. He will return to AVellington in a few days before leaving again for Australia.
By tho Marama, which left for San Francisco yesterday, Mr. F. B. Freed, of tho liailways Department, and Mr. A. J. C. Woodford, of the Statisticians' Branch of tho Internal Affairs Department. left on a visi't to the United States to gain information as to methods which may be of advantage to their Departments.
The Rev. F. M. Beattie, Presbyterian minister in To Kuiti, has received a call to Caversluim, Dunedin.
The death occurred last evening; at his residence, Brougham Street, of a very old resident of AYellington. Mr. Henry Brittain. The late Mr. Brittain. who was 80 years of age, had been -ill for about four months.
Mr. W. S. M'Kinlay, a victor from England, has just left Wellington for thß south. Later he will leave for Australia en route to South Africa.
Mr. John M'llvride has been appointed a ranger under the Animals' Protection Act; for the Wellington acclimatisation district.
Mr. J. A. Russell, superintendent of telegraphs at Napier, has received advice of his transfer to Gisborne in a similar capacity.
The Rev. .T. P. Jones, 8.D., of Thames, has received the degreo of Doctor of Divinity from Oskaloosha University for a thesis on "The Human Cry and the Divine Response." The New Zealand Baptist Union congratulated Mr. Jones on his success. .
Mr. Walter Bentley, the veteran actor, List week completed the allotted span of 70 vears.' Ho is still enjoyiing good health, and regularly attends his studio in Sydney, at which many promising students daily receive the benefit of an experience extending over 10 years. During a residence of ten years in Sydney he has associated Mmself with many public movement';, in the collection of funds for war purposes, and in connection with the early closing of hotels. Old players will remember with pleasure his remarkably fine performances in several Shakespearean plays—and notably "Hamlet,' "Tne Merchant of Venice,, and Othello — and in "The Silver' King and The Bells."
Mr, Gavin Wilson, locomotive engineer, of Pi'tone, wh*> ha 6 been appointed to proceed to England to superintend the construction of locomotives there, will leave Petone on Tuesday next. Mr. Wilson will be away for about a year.
