Miss Belle Cameron (Ivaiwurra) leaves on a visit to Dunodin next week, Mrs. Boddington (Newcoiube, Masterton) is visitijjtj Wellington. The friends of Mrs. Geoffrey Craster will regret to hear of her death as tho result of a train accident in England. Mrs. Craster was Miss Flora D'Oyly. Tho engagement is announced of Miss Janet Rutherfurd, younger daughter of Mr. F. W. Eutherfurd, of Wairnma Downs, Auckland, to Mr. (Malcolm Gordon, eldest surviving son of the late Mr. J. B. Gordon, of Parnell, Auckland. The many friends of Mrs. Sarah Lucy Stealey (wife of the Rev. H. T. Stealey, M.A.) will be sorry to Hoar of her death at Kiugsbridge, Souih Devon, England. She .was well known in, the Wellington district, where she settled in Octobor, 1902, and left in December, 1919, on account of failing health. She was a strenuous worker in every place where 6ho accompanied her husband, namely, in St. Paul's Parish, Wellington, Otaki, Clareville, Levin, and Petone. The Rev. 11. T. Stealey having been appointed "Duncombe Lecturer" in connection with tho Parish Church, Kingsbridge, - South Devon, England, in May last, she took up' her residence there. For a time her health improved, but. sho _ had another breakdown in July. Sho died in a_ private ward of tho Cottage Hospital, Kingsbridge, on August 17. The funeral took place at Churchstcw on August 21 The Hon. Division of the Women's National Deserve held a meeting on Monday to make arrangements for the gathering of mothers and wives of soldiers on Armistice Day, November 11. . Mrs. Gordon Ponsonby was elected president, r.nd Mesdames R. W. Holmes and Boden vice-presidents. An old colonist, Mrs. Esther Savieri, of Tinakori Road, died in Sydney recently after ft short illness. She arrived in New Zealand in the early seventies, most of her lifetime being spent in Wellington. Mrs. Savieri, who was well and favourablv known, leaves a son and daughter 'in Sydney, three daughters m the Dominion, besides numerous grandchildren, and three great grand-tluldren. The new croquet grounds of the Wellington South Croquet Club, which have been formed on the Town Belt, at the head of Mein Street, were formally opened. on Wednesday afternoon. Miss Lulu Brandon is visiting Auckland. At tho conference of tho. National Council of Women, which is being held in Norway, New Zealand is being represented by Mrs. Todd Smith, one of the board of directors of -the Auckland Y.W.C.A. Genuine regret will be felt by the numerous friends of Mrs. Galvin (wife of Mr. Patrick Galvin, the veteran journalist) at the announcement of her death, at the family residence, on tho the Evans Bay Ron'd, on Tuesday night. Tho late Mrs. Ga.lvin, who was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Elson Brown, was bora in London 64 years ago, and came to New Zealand when she was a child. She was an old resident of Wellington, and a lady who was noted for her charitable and kindly disposition. The members of lu>r family are: Mr. P H. G. Galvin. of Gisljorne, and Mr. ; B. P. An Appreciation. Yesterday afternoon Mr. "Cairo" Brad- J ley was the guest of honour at a gathering arranged by tho civic group of the Women's National Council (Wellington branch) to enable Wellington women to meet one who had done much for those of their men belonging to tho New Zealand Expeditionary Force, who had been in Egypt. While the war was on Mr. and Mrs. Bradley had thrown their home open at any and all times to . soldiers, and had worked in ©very possible way for their well-being. Yesterday's gathering gave an opportunity for expressing appreciation and gratitude for what Mr. and Mrs. Bradley had done Many were present, and Lady Stout presided. Several brief speeches were made after the chairwoman's introductory remarks, Lady Chayt'or telling those present what General Sir Edward. Clmytor had said of the work for the soldiers done by Mr. and Mrs. Bradley, and Mrs. Spratt and Mrs. De Castro also speaking, the lattei havine had personal knowledge of Mr. and Mrs. Bradley's activities. Mr. Bradley himself spoke at some length, relating some of his experiences,. and also describing pome of the conditions that prevailed at Cairo and Alexandria. At the close of bis speech Mrs. A. R. Atkinson proposed a voto of tbanks to Mr. Bra [Hey for what ho had told them that afternoon, and Miss M'Lean seconded it. Mrs. ITEodes Williams and Miss Kebbell were 111 charge of croquet, Mrs. Wilford and Mrs Dymock undertaking clock golf anq IjlLtling, and Mrs. Green arid Mrs. Mapill being in charge of various competitions. Mrs. Tully, sweets, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. 'White; needlework (plain, and fancy), Mrs. Larnacli and Miss Brandon. Ihe tea arrangements were carried out by Dustin'e. Tho Wellington Croquet Club's season was opened on Wednesday afternoon by tho presi'dent, Mrs. 3. I'. Luke, 0.'8.E:, in the presence of a large number of the members, lady friends, and visitors from other clubs. The president said she was glad' to see such a gathering, for it looked well for Me success-of the club; which was only in its second year. Tho membership. of tho club showed a, good increase, and it was hoped before long to have the'second green ready for play. The pavilion and tea tables were specially decorated with flowers representing tho club's colours. Afternoon .tea was dispensed by the members of the committee. Three competitions were held, the winners being Mesdames Brighting, Morrali, and Pritchard.
