PUNISHMENT FOR STEAMER THIEF

At the Lyltelton Police Court to-day, Thomas Doeherty, a fireman on the Wahino, appeared on three charges of theft of clothing on Monday during the trip between Wellington and Lyttolton. Ho pleaded guilty. Mr. M'Carthy, S.M., said ib had got to a pretty state now that tho railways, ships and wharTes' woro no longer safe places for OJiyone to leave luggage or othor goods. Ho had already stated that fines were no longer applicable, and accused would bo sontenccd to three months' imprisonment with hard labour on each chargo, the last two sentences to be concurrent. I
