"-"'•; OTAGO MEMBERS IN CONFLICT
The Legislative Council passed the Valuation of Land Bill (establishing the ...new Assessment Court) and the Militaty Service Amendment Bill (giving civil Courts authority to deal with military offenders) yesterday afternoon without amendments. Ministers faced a more than usually severe bombardment of questions without notice in the House of Eepresentatives. Several interesting answers were given, including an/announcement that a big sale of New Zealand meat had ■, ,'been made to Vestey Brothers by the Imperial Government, and a statement ... of the revised policy of the' Lands Department in regard to soldiers' settlement. .*'.. The reports of Select Committees during the afternoon raised several points oi .'• importance. ■".,'■ Otago members had the floor during the evening in the House. They were 'debating the Hospital and Charitable Institutions Amendment Bill, which pro- ■ poses that some country districts shall'bo separated from Dunedin and constituted : a new hospital district. The Otago members, for and against, feel keenly on ■ this subject, and they argued about the Bill with much vigour and at consid- •; erable length.
