Captain James D. Howett, of the Koyitl Air Force, arrived by the Hivenna at Auckland on Monday on sis months leave of absence. Captain Howett,< who is a New tfealander, joined tho Royal Air Force five years ago, and saw fighting in Franco and Flanders. He was promoted captain on tho field, ami was awarded the French Croix do Guerre with palms. After the- armistice he was posted to India, where he served through the recent frontier fighting. Captain Hewetfs wife and eon reside iu Auckland.
The ninny friends and acquaintances, business and private, of Mr. S. G. Boss, thu well-known jeweller and engraver, of Lwnbton Quay, will learn with regret of hi's death, which occurred at his residence, Rona Bay, on Tuesday night. Deceased- was the second son ot the late Mr. W-F. Ross, formerly in business in Wellington, and was bom .it Ilokitika. He camo to Wellington with his parents some fifty years ago. and was ono of the first pupils of the JLarist Brothers at theft school in Boulcott Street. He was for years a valued member of the St. Mary of the 'Angels Choir, ono of the old members of tho Wellington Rowing Club, a member ot the first' Eastbourne Borough Council, nnd ono who always took a keen interest in the affairs of the borough. J. he Into Mr. Ross, who" lmd been in indifferent health for somo time, is survived by a wi'dow and nino children, all girls.
Mr inland M'.K«llnr, general manager of' the Blackball Coal Company, is expected in Wellington to-day.
Mr. G. Spencer Green, at present national physical director for the Australian Y.M.C.A., is expected to arrive, in Christchurch about the middle of the present month to take up t'ho position of physical director of the Y.M.C.A. there.
