THE COMPETITIONS
KAIAPOI GIRL WINS CHIEF PIANO SOLO POOR IMPROMPTU SPEECHES Good attendances were the rule at yesterday's sessions of the competitions. At tho evening session the most important item was thfe chief piano solo, three recall soloists participating, Tho competitors were required to play as a set pjeco a difficult work of Chopin, and also a work of their own selection, points being awarded for each, thy aggregate deciding th'e contest. The winner, Miss Nettie Purdio (Kaiapoi), thoroughly deserved her win. a 9 sliri was opposed to rivals of no mean calibre in Misses Rutter and Gallagher. Her rendering of the set pieco was good, and especially fine was her playing, as a selected piece, of "Rigoletto," hard work in .the treble being successfully mastered.' Tho elocutionary items given were fair, but once again Miss Agnes Smith, who is possessed of splendid dramatic powers, nullified her chance of securing a first place by faulty utterance, although hier acting was highly praised by the.judge (Mr. S. Warwick). The impromptu speeches, of which Mr, F. V. Frazer, S.M., was tho judge, wero tedious, and.it was'a pity that somo of those who had entered in the competition did not make their apprarance. As it was, the audience was plainly bored with the dissertations, of which only one was anywhere near to the standard exPeCted " RESULTS.
