HOLY MATRIMONY
Sir,—l notice in your columns of Septembor 27 an epistlo tinder the beading of "Holy Matrimony," and writtan by one 'H3." I havo no quarrel with vour correspondent's statement pertaining to tho marriagtj festival, but_ iw nn Anglican I holly resent, his sueering reference to our "Prayer Book (which we hold most dear) and its translators, t..« chief of whom was Archbishop Cranmft". "E.'a" swiping assertion that, this prolate and oilier eminent Anglican churchr men of tho period of Edward VI were not of very 'brilliant intellect is on« i that is entirely uncalled for. Martyrs j buol* as Rojfere, Canon of Paul'? (a
translator of the Biblo); Hooper, Bishop of Gloucester; Forrar, Bishop of St. David's; Ridley, Bishop of London; Latimer, Bishop of Worcester (the greatest preacher of liis time); and last but not least. Archbishop Cranmor, went to thp stalce unflinchingly rather than recant their opinions and their faith. I say thes/j martyrs deemed our Prayer Book and our faith worthy of the supreme sacrifice. • Among the foregoing it will bo noted that there is tho greatest preacher of that day, and a translator of tlu> Bible; and wanting in intellect? It seems likely. The laity of that period learned to admire the constancy of the martyrs, and to believe in a faith for which »:« di«d, rejoicingHhat theyi were worthy to suffer. Further, I say that to cast scathing icflections on those who passed away so nobly is, to take a lenient vi,9w of the matteT, contemptible, I would advise "E." to study English history, tho characters, and lives of to foregoing prelates, and really to examine our Prayer Book, before he again cises his most "brilliant intellect.-" I trust by that time he will liavfc thought of the flaying, "Be mortuis nil nisi bonum.—l am, „ OTSOR/ .
