The bridges leading to the city are guarded. Tht* driver of tho delivery van of an independent newspaper was arrested, and the van was seized, Tliore was much revolver shooting in tho Drumcondra area. Several civilian* and soldiers and a sergeant guarding a bridgo over the Drumcondra Canal vers wounded. The military were subsequently -withdrawn.—Aus.-N.Z, Cable Assn. PETITION FORIECOGNITION ' DE VALERA IN AMERICA. New York, October 3. De Valera lias announced that he will petition the State Department for the recognition of tho Irish Republic. Ho said he favoured, placing Ireland in a similar position with respect to England as Cuba occupies in relation to the United States under the Piatt Amendment; that is. that Ireland should agree not to permit any foreign Power to obtain a footing on her soil which might form tho base of an attack on Britain.—Aus.-N.Z.
