THE COMPETITIONS
FINE ELOCUTIONARY ITEMS
BALCONY SCENE FROM "ROMEO AND JULIET" The general excellence of the children s elocutionary section at the Competitions on Saturday was a feature of the programme, and in the finals, held in the evening, an exceptionally high standard was reached. One of the finest classes was the recitation in character for boys and girls under 16, competitors choosing their own selections. Tho winner of this section, Miss Mary Ooolcy, thoroughly de'served her win. Taking us he» piece the balcony scene from "Borneo 4lid Juliet (Shakespeare), she acted her part with ability, and received congratulation from the judge on her efforts. Miss Florence Churchill made an impression In her delightful rendering of Whitticr's poem, "Marguerite," a tale of an Acadian refugee. Her voice, which had not been up to her usual form earlier in the week, regained i-ts resonance, anu altogether her internretation was a telling one. The 'difficult Norwegian Dance, by Edvard Grieg, the Norse composer, is not a piece usually conquered by little tots, but in the piano duet, for children under 10 years of age, Miss K.
