Poultry Progress. every part ol the- country wo tftrn of a revival In the poultry industry. Breeders are supplying stock and «ffga ill large quantities, Though feuds are dear, the price of eggs has advanced, end those In a position to cay,' Btate they •TO doing bettor'tcir than in past years. ' A very noticeable cliango 1b taking place 1r poultry; matters. Tho farmers who , o»ea to • produce' the bulk' oi the eggs ! have ceaied to keop poultry, while: speci ialieta hare increased .In law number;), Ud can cater for the demand. There is fcfnplo soope for development, and the time . it ripe for . a more progressive policy to .1 M adopted; Oatß are likely ,to take an i toPOttant'part in the food question, and i tfodncera aro hot so dependent on wheat M formerly.-. The demand for eggs is i Increasing,' whllo tho nxport trade proBuses; a great future. Tho ,poultry-keop-eri cm look forward to a period of pros- ■ perlty. . Organisation haß done much ior .. the industry in fixing the price of eggs Wid-ropplying foods, ... is no secret or trick in raising I itrong, healthy, /vigorous- clucks, yet moat ct us who have had some years, breeding " experience can remembjr with some regret seasons when we failed to raise the eMoki we needed. The cause of this failure wan not difficult to looate: it, :can always be placed- under one of three headings, thus: Breeding, Hatching, Feeding. ' Of these three leading factors In raising profitable pullets for , next sear«on the most'important, Ib breeding. :ind this is the one section m which failure means dsaster. If we could so -perfect onr breeding stock .that every egg in flrhloh the germ- of life starts should produce a - strong healthy chick i capable of telng raised to maturity, then we could . easily double our annual harvest of poul- ■ try and eggs, with possibly only the same outlay as at present. The yearly losses from infertility, lack of vigour in the i-crm, poor utallty m the ' nowly'-hatched chick, which causes tho , chick to dio in the shell or ahortly after being hatched, are all due to defects in the parent bird or in the attention bestowed on them. The question of how to get a larger pr'fit.from our . poultry can be answered by improving tho vigoui of our flocks, with tho resulting better ; hatches, stronger chicks, moro pullets raised, and increased egg-laying power of the hens. . . One of the fundamental principles wlncli covern- profitable ixultry culture lfl that of inherited strength and vigour, and:it is now clearly apparent to ull tnougnt: ixs\ .poultrymen that there con be no long continued success in production without the maintenance o£ i vigorous parent stock. The transmission of \ it.il energy from parent to offspring la clearly the'basic principle of all vl .So™" 3 ¥?• . and in successful poultry raising this ' consists in mating the.-mort vigorous fowls for breeding nooses. ' . The effects of the transmission of vigour mav bo expected to be shown by the ier« tllity. and the batchability of.the.eggß, and in the production of strong .healthy chicks Both of these factors have an important bearing in raising to maturity e larger number cf fowls out of a # , / number if chicks .hatched, and. this 11 ?h« £ 5 ep towards increasing .our oup- ' ply' of poultry without anjv^mateml ffi-taifS' « ai'v, ; to^'of"nature" '•' between the breeding stock to be mated.
