TOP PRICE FOR RAW SUGAR
'GOVERNMENT NEEDS THE MONEY
Mr. R. Mastens (Stratford), asked, in tho House why the public was beins charged the flame price for third-grade sugar a.s for first grade. He mentioned that until the strike at the Auckland refinery tho third-gi'ade sugar had been cheaper than tho first grade. \ The Hon. E. P. Loc replied that ow ms te tho striko tho Government was unable to supply first-grade sugar, and it was supplying third grade at tho same price. This arrangement would continue nntil refined sugar.became available again, the reason for this arrangement; was that tho Government had been put tn considerable expanse in connection with the distribution of the raw sugar, and moreover there wero now extra wages to be, paid by the Government. When refined su»ur bccame available tho demand for tlio 'raw or third-grade sugar would be small and tho old ptico arrangement would be resumed.
