The leasehold members of the House had obstructed this Bill On other occasions, and they were not deterred from fighting again by the fact that the next Bill on the Order Paper was the Civil List Bill,' proposing increases in members' salaries. Eventually the Te Aroha'Leases Bill was put through committee unamended and parsed. , Amendments to'the Civil List Bill were introduced by the Government. The ■increases in salaries proposed by Ministers were larger than the increases in the original Bill, but did not go as far as tho recommendations of tho joint committeo had done. Much discussion toot place on tho Ministers' proposal that the increases should date from Jane SO last. Most members thought that the period of restrospection. should bo longer, and the Prime Minister eventually postponed this, clause, with a promise that the period should be from April 1.
