SMUTS PLEADS FOR NEW PARTY
TO FIGHT SECESSION POLICY
By Telegraph—Preii Association—Copyright . (Rec.' October 1, 5,5 p.m.) Cape Town, September 30. General Smuts, in a manifesto urging the formation of a new party, says that reunion with the Nationalists was impossi'ble, because they insisted that ac-, tive secession propaganda must form n part of any political programme to which they could subscribe.. The South African Party regards such a policy as wrong, a dangerous violation of the Constitution, and a breach of good faith and understanding. The moderate elements of tho European races had no alternative, than'to draw closer in order to fight that i>olicy. Appeals should be made to join the now party and safeguard the interests of the Union against the disruptive and destructive policy of tho Nationalists, to consolidate tho status and position of tho Union, strength-, en its internal development, and check public lawlessness and indiscipline. Theso objects were best served by a party declaring against revolution, violation of the Constitution, and lawlessness in any shape or form.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
