WAR RELIEF FUNDS
PRECIPITATE DISPOSAL
TARANAKI ASSOCIATION'S POSITION j
Tho inadvisability. of war funds bodies disposing of their funds precipitately lias lieen. emphasised timo and again by tho ohairman of the Welling--ton War .Ilelicf Association. Apropos of this a letter from tho Taranaki Provincial Wui> Belief Association camo bcforo tho local Association yesterday. ,It read: "At a meeting of the executive *(of the Taranaki Provincial War Relief Association) held oil tho 15th. inst.. the matter of fixing a time-limit in respect to further applications on behalf of permanently disabled soldie-.a was fully discussed in conjunction with tlio financial position of the association. The time lias now arrived when tho executive committee must know definitely what commitments will bo made in connection with the permanently disabled; soldiers' scheme. Tho executive committee is loath to discontinue receiving applications, as ' the principle upon which they have been working is whilst funds remain every application shall receive consideration, but as previously stated, the timo lias now arrived when the executive committeo should know definitely what the commitments arp likely to amount to. It was unanimously resolved that applications for assistance under tho permanently disabled soldieiV scheme bo forwarded to this office not later than October 20, being seven days before the data of tlio .October meeting. Applications which may como to hand after October 20 will be deferred and not dealt with, until all the applications, including those which may bo received up to and: including October 20, have been fully considered, provided for, and disposed of where possible. The funds reinaint ing at', the present time represent loans • lo soldiers. In tho meantime tlio
binanco Committee will endeavour to make the best possible arrangements with a view to obtaining an advance from, the blink against securities for soldiers' 1m ns." Mr. Tripp explained that_ Taranaki was one' of the districts which had d«r cided to distribute its funds. Now the association, having given its money away, in many case? to soldiere who were well, had none for sick soldiers who might como upon it. In his opinion Taranaki had been in too much of a hurry. He also . mentioned that Marlborough had a scheme under con< sideration which would practically place it in tho samo position. In his opinion thero would be work for suoh bodies
for years to come. The letter really had nothing to do with the association except thr.t it showed what some of the societies were doing. ( Tho ietter was received.
