COPE EXPEDITION
TO LEAVE CHRISTIAMA .FOB ANTARCTICA. London, September 27. The British Imperial Antarctic Expedition, consisting of Dr. John Cope, and 'Messrs,' G. H. Wilkins, G. M. Lester, and T. W. Bagshawe, has left London for Christiania, whence it will start on a preliminary trip to tho Antarctic. Tho party will go via tlx© Falklands and Deception Island to Hope Bay, in Grahamlaid, vrhero it will establish a base, and spend a year in exploring the Woddel Sea and Deception Island. It will then return to London, and arrange for a big oxjredition, to occupy five years, during which 6pecdally-prepared aeroplanes will make a dash for the Pole.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [Dr. Cope organised an ambitious plan for an expedition to the Antarctic, tho main objects of •which were to ascertain the position and extent of the mineral and other deposits of economic value known to pxist is Antarctica, to obtain further evidence of the localities and migrations of whales of economic value, investigate the meteorological and magnetic conditions in the Boss Sea area and at Capo Ann (Enderby Land), circumnavigate tho Antarctic continent, and generally to extend knowledge of Antarctica, especially -with a view to obtaining _ further scientific data of economic importance. The scheme wtu) considered by the Eoyal Geography cal Society, however, and a sensation was caused when it was learned tlint this important organisation had disapproved of the expedition, and a message' from London, dated Hay 28, stated that it was understood that the proposed expedition had been definitely abandoned-!
