SHIP'S FIREMEN IN TROUBLE. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., dealt with the police cases at tho - Magistrate s Court y MaUhew Heffey, Patrick King, and Michael Cunnihgham, firemen, and mem berg of the crew of the s.s. Mahia, were charged with absenting themsehes from the vessel without leave. H the hi^ asked him for permission to go to Bee a doctor, he would have refused, be cause Dr. Henry came aboard e\ery day to attend to members of the crew, J.he captain indicated that, ho did not■ want Heffey aboard the vessel. King said ho asked the second engineer to permission to go ashore, and he was told to fee the captain, but did not do so. ham pleaded guilty. He stated fianUy that be wanted a day off. and took it, and had no excuses to offer. Cunmng.iam was convicted, and ordered to pay £Z ft. expenses, and to be placed on board; King was fined £1, ordered to pay £2 7s. expenses, and to be returned to the vessel, Heffey was fined 215., ordered to pay £i 7s. expenses, and 21s. solicitor 6 fee, in default 14 days' imprisonment. Florence Turner, a young woman, was charged with stealing a dollar' bill belonging to a fireman named Richard Murray, and a £1 note from another, fireman named James Woolley. The facts were that Murray met the accused in the street about 7.30 p.m., and took, her mto i a restaurant for a mtal; later, they met , Woolley, who was introduced to her by 1 Murray. Woolley took hor into a conI feetioner's and purchased some chocolates I for her. Woolley fclso changed a £5 note; he' placed four of the notes in one I pocket and a flingle note in anotner i pocket, paying for the chocolates "With ! the silver he had in his possession. On coming out Boon afterwards Woolley missed a pound i-.oto, and mentioned the loss to Murray, and he discovered that he had lost the rnly dollar bill he had in lii'J possession. At the same time they saw the girl running away. A policeman was informed, and lie apprehended the girl. On being searched by the police ; matron the dollar till and tho pound note were found on, her. Her defence was that the men had taken pitv on her, and had given lier the money. It was shown.that the accused was married, but separated from her husband, and had four previous convictions.
