Bank of New Zealand Staff Dance,
A very successful private dance, or« g.uiscd by the ctaff of the Wellington branch of tho Bank of New Zealand,-was held in St. Peter's Hall last evening. There was a large attendance of dancers, and with plenty of partners, gocd music, and an excellent floor the dance could not fail to bo most enjoyable. The decorations of lycopcdium, Japaneso lanterns, and coloured drapery were very effective, and in the supper room tho tables were arranged with spring flowers. Tho chaperons for the evening were: Mesdames A. Smith,''J). S. Thompson, I'. L. Porter, and A. 11. Miller. The committee responsible for the arrangements for tho dance was formed by Hisses Miller. Spence, Walmsley, Keaney, Roberts, Messrs. A. G. Henderson, A. Pavitt, R. Kennedy, D. S. Morris, G. W. Hart, and R. Munn. Mr. 11. A. Dona* hoo and Mr. T. H. Lloyd wero the joint secretaries. Among those who were present atjhe dance were: Mr. Bnckleton, Mr. and Mrs. Rigg, Mr. Corkliill, Mr. Dudley Tripe, Mr. Chilnian, Mr. and Mrs. Craig, Mr. and Mrs. Bright, Mr. Rochfort, and Miss Rochfort, Mr. and Mrs. Porter, Mr. Brinknian. and many members of the staff and their friends. Beautiful anemones ami daffodils • -had been sent in from the Hutt for decorative purposes, mid tho members of the committee were distinguished by badges of purple and gold. Mayoress's Fancy Dress Ball for Children. The arrangements for the Mayoress'# fancy-dress ball for children are well iil band, and already some hundreds ol invitations have been issued. The committee feels that it is difficult to Teach all children, and •it desires it to be known that if those who have not received .invitations and wish to attend the ball will send their names to tho Mayoress or Mrs. J. P. Firth (the lion, secretary)•they will receive an invitation at once. Arrangements are being made for the sale of admission tickets at the Bristol Piano Company, at the Town Hall on two afternoons of next week, and at the door on . the evening of the hall, Mrs. J. P. I.uke is receiving great en. conragement ill promises of snppei tables; the success of this part of the ball is assured. Many children are taking part in the lancers sets, and Mrs. Cnrwell Cooke, Misses Beore, Guise, Campbell, Connop, and .Saunders have been appointed to act as a floor committee to arrange these dances and the accompanying grand march with balloon display.

The resignation of Miss H. I. Johnstone as matron of College House was received at a meeting of the High School Board of Governors, Palmerston North,' this week. v
Dr. and Mrs. Adams, formerly of Foxton, returned to' New Zealand last week from England. Dr. Adams'lias been appointed bacteriologist and pathologist to the Wanganui Hospital.
Mrs. P. Harrison (Masterton) is visiting -Wanganui.
The marriage took place on Tuesday morning in St,. Matthew's Church, Masterton, of Miss A. R. Cane, of Masterton (formerly of London), and Mr. C. B. Cox, of Pahiatua. The Rev. J. Walker performed the ceremony, and the bride was given away by her brother, Mr. J. E. W. Cane. The best man was Mr. W. Cox, brother of the bridegroom. After the ceremony the friends of the bride and bridegroom were entertained, at the residence of Mr. and Mre. J. E. ,W, Cane, Tararua Street,
A very pleasant •' progressive euchro. party was held yesterday-afternoon at the residence of Mrs. F.'J. Gooder, Herman Street, ICarori, in aid of tho Karori parish's effort for the Anglican Boys' Homes. The reception rooms were prettily decorated with spring flowers'. Various competitions were hold, and after the . presentation of .the euchre prizes several of those present took part in a-putting competition. Home-made cakes and. sweets, as well as flowers wero sold, 'and a delicious afternoon tea was served. Pianoforte music was contributed by Miss Henry, and a solo was sung by a boy soprano. Mrs. Gooder was assisted by Mi's, and Miss Rhodes Williams and Mre. Middleton. The afternocn entertainment resulted in a substantial addition to the funds.
The sum of .£12,262 has been, forwarded to -the High Commissioner in London from the Auckland province for . the "Starving Children of Europe Fund." This amount, stated .a speaker at a ■meeting held in Auckland 011 Monday, would bo subsidised pound for pound by the British Government. The funds needed, however, aro enormous if these victims of tho war aro- to be saved in any appreciable number. In Chrislchurch a sum of is in hand for the same cause, and at a meeting held there this week it was stated that the men's canvass of the town, had commenced, and it was hoped that the women would canvass the suburbs in conjunction with the Red Cross.
Baroness Furnivall. a youthful peeress in her own right, was married recently in Westminster Cathedral to Lieut. A. Shelton Agar, V.C., R.N., whose exploits iit sinkijig submarines gained for him tho coveted distinction. He also holds the D.5.0., and is coming to New Zealand as an officer on H.M.S. Chatham. Bluejackets from H.M.S. Osea formed a guard of honour at the wedding, and, with their usual cheery good-will, tied ropes to the bridal motor-car and drew it back to the residence of Mrs. Wliitbread, in Eaton Place, w-hero the reception was held.
Yesterday the members of the Methodist- Church, Thorndon, held a shop day. The' Mayoress (Mrs. J. P. Luke) opened the proceedings; She'heartily congratulated tlie promoters on the variety of the articles they had collected, and wished them every success. Good business was done, and the expectations cf the promoters were more than realised. In the evening competitions were held for the young folk. As a result of tho success of the gathering the Trust and Circuit Fund of the church will benefit greatly.
An enjoyable social was lield under the auspices of the Scottish Society in the Town Hall Concert Chamber on Satnrdav evening. The society'.* Pipe Band marched from the Post Office, in • th« evening, and eight o'clock found 0 large leathering of Scots assembled. Recent arrivals from Scotland attended, and expressed themselves ( ag greatly pleased with the social activities of the society. A first-class programme was ably sustained by the following:—Mrs. G. T. Savcsze (soprano). Mr. Patience (basso), Macintyro (elocutionist), _ the society's choir (under tlie leadership of Mr. Nelson), and the society's pipe band (under Pipe-Major J. Taylor). Miss Missen and Air G T. Savare accompanied the vocalists. 'Mr. R. Bell was M.C.. and Mrs. Colin Campbell-and a committee of ladies provided an excellent supper.
The spring show of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society was brought to a successful conclusion on Thursday evening. 111 the deeoi'iited-tables contest Miss .Teati Hendry, ofrl.ower Hutt, secured'the verdict of both the judge and tlie public. Tn tho children's section, Miss I). Johnston was awarded first prize, ami Miss R. Hobbs second. Messrs. T. Wauirli and Sons annexed the Walter and Hall trophy for the best collection of narcissi, and the points prize in tho amateur class (Mr. C. B. Trimnel's trophy) went to Mr. B. Froethey.
