HEAVY RAINFALL
. CANTERBURY RIVERS RUNNING HIGH, Br Telegraph-Press Awoclatlop. Christchurch, September 22. Steady rain set in shortly after noon yesterday and continued without intermission till 6.30 o'clock to-night, a fall of nearly 21 inches b.'injf recorded in the city and more in the country. All the rivers are running high, and the creeks on itlio Peninsula ana elsewhere are in flood. It is reported that a large number of lambs have been lost. ' At luiikoura, Lyell Creek overflowed and flooded the western end of this township, stocks in shops not raised above ttfe floor level 'being damaged. A gang of men. opened up the mouth of the creek and allowed the water to get away, thus relieving the situation. Slips have blocked traffic north and south in the Kaikoura district. , Several inches of snow fell on backcountry stations. At Akaroa. 572 points of rain fell in 24 hours.
