A fire at tho Royal Fortesque Hotel, Barnstaple, Devonshire, cut off viators sleeping in an upper story, ff. J. Gil T bert, who won the D.C.M. while serving with the Australians, finding tho ladders too short, daringly lashed several togother nnd rested thein on a wagon, thus rescuing six peopld.—Aus.-N.Z.
