CITY COUNCIL BY ELECTION

VOTE TO-DAY. District electors' of Wellington are again reminded of the by-election which is to take place to-day to fill the vacancy caused by tbe death' of the late Councillor George Frost. The candidates are Messrs. W. J. Gaudin and T. Brindle. Mr. Gaudin will go to to-day's poll free, to exercise his' brains, .judgment, andbusiness capacity in tho best interests of the city. Mr. Brindle is the nominee of .the Now Zealaud Labour Party, who, in municipal as well as national politics, exert the right to dictate the course a member must pursue, if elected. Tho franchise for to-day's poll is the roll of district electors, which is practically the same roll used in Parliamentary elections. No new roll lias been, prepared for this election, so that all citizens who voted at the election of Mayor, City Council, Harbour Board, and Hospital and Charitable Aid Board in April of last year,'.or were then on the roll, will be entitled to vote. The polling places will be the same as used in connection with Wednesday's loan poll. The booths will be open, for voting at 9 a.m., and will, close at 7 p.m. A meeting in support of the campaign of the Labour candidate, Mr. T. Brindle, was addressed by tho candidate, and Mr. H. E. Holland, M.P.. in Post Office Square, at .the lunch hour yesterday. At no time was the attendance very large. The speakers set forth the views of Labour regarding the conduct of municipal enterprises, and stressed the urgency or dealing with the housing situation, they both declared against the continuance of private enterprise in businesses that affected the community as a whole, the candidate contending that a success could be made of a municipal bakery and a municipal coal supply.
