SCHOOL FOR SILVER SIREAM
'deputation to education boahd,
The needs of Silverstream in school matters wero BtrejiKd by a deputation from the district before the Wellington Education Boar* yesterday. Mr. F. Carson, spokesman of the deputation, urged the claim of the district. Ho hoped the board would not make any definite decision until the matter had been fully inquired into. There wero 30 families and W children under fifteen yearn of a?c in the district, Thirty-five of the children had to attend the Urner Jlutt School, four milep away. Including travelling time, the children were away from home aver eieht hours. .Mr. Carson considered that Iteretaunsa where it had been psopossflto- erect a Bchool. would never be a school centre, or a centre of population. A school waß required at Silverstream and one at Trenthara. The deputation considered it had the stronper claim. and the obtaining of a school site at Silverstream would merely mean the shifUm? of a site from Herctauima. In reply to the chairman (Mr. Forsyth) Mr. Carson considered the converninir of roads at Silverstream would add to the township. "A penal settlement iB to be formed at Iferctaunea." ho added, "nnd the school site as proposed is near- the uaolcr's residence. This will not add ■to tho settlement of the district" Similar views were expressed by Messrs. 13. E. Jones and 0. the other members of the deputation. II waß decided to approve a Knint for a. school to Fcrvo Silverstream.
