A GREAT SURPRISE
ONLY 5000 RATEPAYERS VOTE Even in tha most optimistio circles the carrying of all nine proposals included J P the record .£1,708,916 loan poll for City works was never anticipated, yet such was the result. The result when announced at 9.p.m. came as a surprise to the Mayor and those members of the council who attended at the Tom Hall last evening to learn tho issue of the poll, and congratulations were naturally the order of the evening:. The voting, throughout the day was Tory tmiet. and entirely without incident. It was a poll of ratepayers only, and only some 21,000 persons in the whole of Greater Wellington were concerned. Yet, roughly, only some 5000 of them were interested enough to record their votes.
The first result was received by the acting chief returning officer (Mr. Arthur Ames) nt 7.20 p.m.. and the final return came to hand at 9 p.m.. and Mr. Jam'ee Ames, jnn (of the City Treasurer's office), who had charge of the main return sheet, was ablo to announce, aa the hour struct, that all nine proposals had been carried, which! was' a highly creditable performance to all concerned. THE MAYOR GRATIFIED "TEE WORD IS 'FORWARD'!" "It is needless to say how very pleased I am," said the Mayor after the result of the poll was made known last evening, "a pleasure that I am sure will be stared by every councillor. It is a great win—one that shows that the ratepayers generally not only appreciate the soundness of the council's progressive and development policy, but that they have gieat faith in-Wellington. To have carried every proposal in the schedule slowed in tho first instance (bat the people were determined that the word is 'Forward,' and that they favoured an advancement on sound progressive lines. They showed not only, a trust in the' council to do the right thing, but that confidence of'the people in, the city-is an asset of strength and an added security to the money-lending section of the community. » "I want to pay- a tribute." said the Mayor, "to all the councillors aiid citizens who came forward and energetically helped in the campaign which has . brought about such a grand result. The meetings addressed by councillors in connection with. the loan proposals, and the enthusiastic bands of citizens who arranged different public meetings, had also been no inconsiderable factor in determining the minds of the ratepayers of Wellington to. press forward with those works that are calculated to make for the safety, convenience, and happiness of the people of Wellington. To the Press I wish to extend my sincere thanks. The papers'have been of great assistance in connection with the campaign in the more than ordinaiy interest which they have displayed in advancing the cause which lias 'been crowned with such signal success. The work ahead in , carrying out the mandate of the people is considerable, and it will require the earnest" consideration of the council to see that the works resulted in the greatest bonefit of the people in the different portions of the city. These works will be carried out in accordance with our capacity to spend the money on sound lines. The money will lie raised at different periods, so that citizens will not be , oalled upon to pay interest on money not in rise. I join with the councillors in their feelings of exultation at the achievement of to-day, and, as a last word, thank them for their hearty cooperation Tigbt through."
