GOLF TOURNAMENT

THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

FINAL ROUNDS DESCRIBED

By Tolenraph—Fross Association. Hamilton, September 11. Bright weat'lier, but with a strong, steady wind from the north-cast, was experienced for the second day of the golf tournament. The two linal rounds in tho open championship were completed and two qualifying rounds in the amalieur championship were played. Large crowds followed Jvirkwood and Duncan during tho whole day. ICirkwood was obviously ill at ease during the morning round and lacked the deadly accuracy usually characteristic of his play. Though lie was several times in trouble he retnverabwell, but the heavy greens completely nonplussed him. His 78 was very liacd earned indeed. At the end of the morning 110 was only two strokes to the good of the local amateur, S. Morpeth, and naturally excitement rail high. Tho strain told 011 the amateur, hovrever, and he lacked the conlidenco which had enabled him 10 build up his three fine opening scores. He was 41 out to Kiikwood's 49, and from that onward went steadily back till he finished with an 85. Kirkwood again pulled badly in the afternoon, but lie brought off some phenomenal shots into tttio wind and bis gamo generally wns full of courage and resource. Somebody bot him that ho could not liolo out tho last hole, 438 'yards, down the wind 111 three. He laid his second dead with tho iron and holed out. . East, the Australian professional, crashed in the morning, taking 81, but redeemed himself with a fine 75 in tho .itternoqn, i"st beating Douglas by a stroke in the aggregate. There will be a great four-ball here on 'tVilriy, the two AusiTalians playing Douglas and lies, who played off M'Ewan over nine, holes for the honour and beat him one iip. lies and M'Ewan played excellent golf and with a little luck might have been very near the top. ])r. Eoss played a very fine round of 7(i in the morning, and many predicted that! he would run into second place, but ho met with bad luck 011 the journey and returned an 84. . . Cross, the amateur champion, is fast coining into favour, and may be expected to bo in the final with a good chance of retaining tHie title. ..... A. Duncan has pone right back in his l>lay, .but there is a young player named Pluck, from the Wellington muniopal links, who will take a lot of beating. _ Florton, of Wairarapa, is also .shaping v'ery well, but lacks the physique for a gruelling finish on such an exacting courts as Hamilton. JC irk wood Hire"!- Clements in the first round, of the professional championship and Blair plays East. The following, are the best: scores in the open championship:—
