Notwithstanding tho boisterous night and counter-attractions over a hundred enthusiasts ventured out to witness the opening games of the Alcock inter : club billiard championship. The first two players were Stone, of the Petonc Workingmen's Club, and Munro, of the local Returned Soldiers' Club. Both men appeared well matched, and from the commencement of the game up to 200 points first oue and then the other led. After this, however. Munro got going, and was ablo to draw away. He was also fortunate and skilful enough to leave Stone difficult positions. The game ended Munro, 300; Stone, 264. • The best ..reaks were:—Winner, 25 and 20; loser, 3JI. In the second game between Devine, of the Petone Workingmen's Club, and Brackenridge, of the Mail Boom Club, billiards were bright from the start, both players opening wall. Devine, however, had the beat of matters, and very 6oon drew strongly in the lead. At 140 this player had an advantage of ovor 70 polntß and' looked as if he would win easily. Braekcnridge, , playing an uphill game, pluckily, now commenced to forge ahead, and managed to reach within a few points of the leader. Devine then gave a pretty and clever exhibition, and managed to again sccuro a substantial advantage score. Devine. 267; Brackenridge, 201. From this op the issue, xas never in doubt. Devine reaching 300 points (game) when Brnckeuridge was 222. The best, breaks were—Devine, 33, 20, 20; Brackenridge, 21, 19. To-night Saye'r will play Tyrrell at 1 p.m., and at 8.15 p.m. Duncan will play Garforth.
