CENTRAL PROGRESS LEAGUE
SUPPORT FROM HUTT COUNCIL. At last night's meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council a letter was received from the Central Progress Leaguo appealing for financial assistance for tho carrying on of the league's work. The Mayor (Mr. E. P. Rishworh) said that, so far, the council had not contributed anything to the league.
Councillor W. T. Cotton said that it was most unfortunate that he was tho only member of the Progress League present at the meeting. One of the aims of the league, said the speaker, was to obtain quick transit between Wellington and Blenheim. It was a live body, and one whose interests should be fostered. Ho honed that the council would see its way to grant the league something substantial. Councillor Cotton moved, and Councillor A. Macaskill seconded, that the council grant tho sum of twenty guineas toward tho finance of the league. Councillor A. J. Hobbs, while supporting Councillor Cotton's motion, thought the council was equally as poor as tho league.
Councillor Mitchell, who also was of the opinion tliat the sum was too large, moved as an amendment that the leacuo be granted five guineas. Councillor Hobbs seconded the amendment, which was carried.
