OUR FROZEN MEAT AT HOME
Prom our Special Correspondents. Pnlmcrston N., September 11. The following extract from a letter received by Sir. John Balsillie, of Palmers, 'on North. from his brother in Scotland, gives an idea of the state of the Home markets in connection with frozen meat from tho Dominion. The letter is dated July 13. and in it the writer says:—"The Farmers got a rather unpleasant surprise last week when tho meat was decontrolled. They had been keeping tho market short of fat stock, expecting a biff risn in prices, and the butchers put the price of beof np by sixpence per pound, but at. the first sale there was no difference at all. or hardly any. Rome farmers who had stock in the market, when they saw how prices went, took the stock back home, and as the markets seemed to be settled down to about control figures, the butchers have halved the rise by reducing the price by threepr.nco per pound. Mutton still keeps scarce and dear, about 2s. to 2s. (id. per lb., so there is a gcod opening for New Zealamd mutton; but. somehow, owing to the bad stuff supplied during the war, under tho guisei of being Now Zealand mutton, whilo it was Falkland Island and Argentine, folk got soured, nnd it. will take fl time before the distaste for imported stuff dies away and tho market recovers. I think it will depond a good deal upon New Zealand or her agents lhere perfect! nc their business methods, which requires a little more push. Of course, it may be different in bis towns where there are larger sales, but I am only speaking about St. Andrews, where I live."
