NGAIO V. VOBKING. MEN'S CLUB. The sixth match between the above clubs waß played at the rooms of the Working Men's Club on Saturday evening, and passed off most sucessfully, thanks to tho complete arrangements made by Mesßrs. Finlayson (manager) and Faulknor (hon. ocretary). Shortly before 8 p.m. Mr. Barnes (captain) extended a cordial welcome to the visitors, and announced tho pairing for the fourteen tables. At tho adjournment for refreshments each sido had scored three Barnes. Iu the f.nal hour the home team made a fine lato run, scoring freely at the higher boards, and ultimately winning the match by <U games to 45. At Board 1 Barnes gained a" pawn in the mid-game. and. aided by positional advantage, afterwards gained a minor piece, scoring the game shortly before 11 'P.m. At Board 2 Kelling went astrav in the opening (Philidor's Defence), and Jones won a pawn. He did not, however, make the most of his opportunity, nnd later on made an unsound sacrifice, which enabled Kelling to score at move. 34. Positional advantage enabled. W. C. White to announce mate in two at. Board 3 at the 9.30 adjournment. In a stubborn.congest at Board 4 Lindsay (Nfjaio) at F.rst had the upper hand, through gaining a, pawn. In the. final stage, however, he made si clip, and lost a minor piece, which gave the verdict to Faulknor. At Board 5 Carman, with knight and 5 pawns, tried hard to draw against Burgess (bishop and six pawns), but the latter prevailed. At Board 6 E. E. Hicks was a rook down, but succeeded in drawing by .perpetual check. A. J. Larking, a Crimean veteran, scored for the home team at Board 13-a popular win. The score of tho match iB as follows:— . The play-off for the championship cf fats club between D. Purchas (winner of Section A) and G. P. Andor*n (winner of ■Section I!) «'»s concluded on Tuesday ovening, the former being victorious by two games to one. This is the fifth tlin» that the club has held a championship tourncv. Mr. Purchas has won the title three -'times (in 1916. 1919. and 1920), and Mr. G. P. Anderson twice (In 1917 and in 1918). ■
