ASSAULT ON A CONSTABLE

SUBSTANTIAL PINES INFLICTED.

Before Messrs. J. "W. M'Ewan and J. Piper, J.P.'s, at a sitting of the Pet One Court on Saturday .morning, Bichard Hoare appeared on a charge of assaulting Constablo Harrison, while the latter was in the execution of his duty. Eustace Evelyn Schofer (known as Casey Burton) was also charged with wilfully obstructing the police. It was stated that at about G o'clock on Friday evening, when Constable Harrison was trying to quell a disturbance in Jackson Street, accused struck him a violent blow on tho ear, splitting it, and dazing him to such an extent that he was unable to effect an arrest. Accused was under the influence of liquor, and making a nuisance of himself. ConBtablo Harrison had requested Hoare to go home. Accused was inclined to obey, but Schofer incited him to resist, tbe result being an assault on-the constable. Upon the advent of a hostile crowd tho nonstable went for assistance, and later the two accused were apprehended. For assault Hoare was fined .£lO, in default two months' imprisonment, and Schofer, for obstructing the police, was fined £1 10s.. or two months imprisonment.
