BUTTER PRICES

Sir,—l am sorry the directors of tho •dairy association have allowed themselves to bo bounced into selling the exportable surplus of.buter to the Imperial Government at less than current market value at Home, but pleased to sec that thay remain obdurate in their demand 'for tho export price -without any levy upon tho Consolidated Fund for that withheld for local consumption. Tho cost of manufacture of both butter and cheese has- increased very nearly threefold during the last six or seven years, every penny of which lessens the income of the producer; and it is unfair of townsfolk, most of whom havo hnd their incomes increased, to spongo upon the dairy farmer both ways, and levy upon tho Consolidated Fund as well, seeing' that quite one-half of tlio fund is contributed by primary producers. This Government dry nursing may bo permissible during war, but in times of peaco tho farmer should demand tho privilege of managing his own affairs, 1 , and sell his wares to the highest bidder, notwithstanding tho report of any Parliamentary committee, who are sure to. slate the farmer.—l am, etc.. / DAIRYMAN.
