HEATS IN BRISBANE HANDICAP. (Rec. September 12, 5.5 p.m.) Brisbane, September 12. A big crowd watched the heats in the, Brisbane Handicap, worth JJ3SO, rowed over about a two-mile course on tho Brisbane River, in ' which tho leading scullers competed. Tho first beat proved an easy task for l'clton, with M'Davitt second and C. Mes-. ficnger third. Time, 20min 50sec. Tlie second heat- resulted: Christenscn (Queensland), 1; C. Matterson, 2; Short, '! Barry, from stmtoli, only managed (o get fourth place, twelve lengths behind Short. Time, 18min. 42sec. Third heat: Arnsti. 1; Ripley, 2; West, 3 Towns was fourth. Arnst, with long, powerful strokes, steadily wore down tho earlier starters, getting in front during Die last half-mile, and winning comfortably. Time, 17min. 26Jsec—Press Assn.
