MURDER AT PUKEKAWA
POLICE EFFECT AN ARREST By Telegraph-Press Association. Auckland, September ]2. The arrest was effected on Saturday afternoon, at Tuukau, of a furni labourer ■mined Samuel John Thorn on a charge of murdering Sydney Seymour Eyre, at Pukekuwa, on the night of August 24. Thorn was couveyod to Aucklund in custody ou Saturday evening, and will ba brought up at the Police Court to-morrow morning The arrested man is 33 years of ago. He is married, but has for some timo been living opart from his wife and family of six children. While Eyro was on activo service tor over two years Thorn managed the farm for Mrs. Eyre. In July, Eyre having roturned, Thorn went to work nt Glen Murray, 18 miles from the Eyre homestead. He had been working there for about six weeks when the murdor was committed, and during that period had paid three visits to Eyres. A double-barrelled shot-gun and some ammunition were found in Thorns whare, and these have been submitted to an expert, whose report is in the hands ol tlij police. ~. It is understood the authorities are ■■satisfied that only one shot, was fired, and that a special kind of cartridge was used. Some pellets found in the murdered man's room are in the possession of the police. It is understood that the poli™ investigations established three points: (1) The murder was not committed tor robbery; (2) the perpetrator must have been acquainted with the house and surroundings; (3) the shot was fired outside the house.
