Tho Land Purchase Controller's annual report to the Minister of Lands upon .She operation of tho Land fov Settlements Act, 1008, states:- . "The number of estates' offered during the year was les3 that for the previous one, being 161, of an acreage of 610,080 acres. The whole was considered'for solder settlements. The ■ area purchased and completed is 176.836 acres, of a value of .£1,(129,4%. Besides there was purchased for individual soldiers 25,061 acres, of a value of ,£423,017. Further areas were purchased but not yet taken over-viz., 47,235 acres, valued at £583 "81, for ballot, and 1G.514 acres, valued at J!M3.460, for individual soldiers. The areas dealt wulli show a large increase on previous yenj the general demand for land especially for dairying apd graz'ing, is extremely keen, and prices are being paM for properties far beyond what the members of .the tards' feel t.hev can snfelv recommend. A lareo number of tho places offered present insuperable difficulties in the way of reading and subdividine into reasonable areas, nnd the want of suitable liomesiend sites. The lot of a new settler is for from being a happy one. the cost of oil farm requirements beitng pvacticallv prohibitive, and many are unprocurable "
