A FREEHOLD V. LEASEHOLD DIVISION

The Marriage Amendment Bill, with the new clause relating to "mixed marriages," was read, a third time nnd passod in the Legislative Council yesterday- without discussion. The Bill haf now to go to the House of Keprescntatives. The Council, at tlio suggestion of the Attorney-General, further adjourned for a fortnight the Bill dealing with the constitution o£ the Council. A petition asking for the freehold of national endowment land gave rise to a discussion on tho tenure question in the House of Representatives. The House was divided for the first time in the life of this Parliament on the issue of freehold v. leasehold. The freeholders won easily. The House spent some time in the discussion of electoral boundaries nnd the "country quota," During the evening the Licensing Amendment Bili, dealing with the transfer of licenses, gavo rise to a general discussion on the licensing question. ('The Prime Minister told the House that the licensing law would not_ be amended in any comprehensive way until another poll had been taken. If tho liquor trade survived the next poll, important legislation would be required.
