NAVY LEAGUE

IMPORTANT COMMITTEES SET UP,

Mr. A. F. Roberts presided at- a meeting of the Wellington branch of tho Navy League held yesterday afternoon. Partly ae a matter of general policy and partly owing to the luck of considered judgment on the part of members of tho House of Representatives on naval matters, tho executive set ( up a special Naval Committee, consisting of Colonel G. F. C. Campbell, Messrs. A. F. Roberts, and Ernest W.' Hunt, whose special work will be the careful study of naval questions as affecting New Zealand, in order that there may be somo body capable of expressing intelligent and helpful views on such questions. The Navy Leaguo of England has such a committee, who speak with no uncertain voice and with considerable weight on matters of naval policy, and now that Now Zealand is within measurable distapce of having a unit of the Imperial Navy in these it wns considered that such a committee would do useful work. _ A committee, consisting of Captain Chudley, R.N.R., Messrs. A. Hollis, mid B. Keesing, was set up to co-operate with the ladies' branch of tho league in entertaining the mercantile cadets who come to Wellington. A considerable number of these lads, graduates of the Worcester and tho Conway, come to New Zealand, and. being utter strangers, appreciate a little insight into homo-life. The ladies of the league have, been doin" a good deal of entertaining m this direction for some twelve months past, and it is to supplement their efforts that this committee has been set up. It was reported that the arrangements in connection with tho celebration of Nelson Day (October 21) were in goodtrain. This is to take the form of a children's we'.como to lord .Tellinoe at the Town Hall. The Prince's Choir of one thousand scliool -children ,is to lisA dance to be' given by the ladies of the league, subsequent to the arrival of the Governor-General, is being arranged, and everything points to it being a. highly successful gathering. .
