" ; 'GOOD ROADS AND MOTOR-BUS ~...,„ PROPOSALS CARRIED. By Teleerapli-Bpoctel Correspondent. Palmerston North, September t>. - The advocates of tho motor-bus scheme ~fls. against the tramway proposals for Palmerston ■ North have been leaving no stone unturned to carry their pet scheme, and in connection with the polls held today to give authority to tho Borough Council of Palmerston North to raise loans' of ,£9OOO for motor-buses and (£60,000 for better roads, they arranged with the proprietor? of tho New' Ply- ''' month buses to send down their largest vehicle. It is aSO horse-power White truck with a char-a-banc bodY capable of carrying about thirty-five passengers, and - has a very nice appearance, and runs tmoothly. • It came from New Plymouth to Palmerston North in four hours and a half, doing the distance from Wnngnnui in nn hour and fifty-five minutes. It has.been engaged all day in running paseengers to the poll, and will return to New" Plymouth to-morrow. The bus weighs three tons seven hundredweight, and the general consensus of ooinion in town to-day was that it is too large and too heavy for the requirements of this borough, lighter vehicles, carrying up to twenty passengers, being considered more Miitablo. for the traffic in this centre. A good deal oi interest was manifested in the joint polls. The proposal to raise .£70,000 for road improvements was carried ,by GGB votes to "' 277, and the scheme to raise .£9OOO for motor-buses was carried by 638 votes to 315.
