WAR SECRET REVEALED,
How firemen saved a town, a closolyIcept war secret, is revealed by the award of medals of the 0.8. E. to Superintendent Woods. Third Officer Skelton, Sergeant Grcetham, and Fireman Moore, of the Grimsln Kirc Brigade, says tlio "Daily Mail." On ■Tune 13, 1915, H.M. munition ship NB7 was hurriedly laden with high explosives nt Grimsby for a French port. Just ae she was about to sail fire broko out on board, and made suoli headway that the ordinary five pump's wero unable to chock the outbreak. Tt was realised that: if the flames reached the cargo not only the whole of Grimsby docks but a large portion of the town must be wrecked by the explosion. The only hope of preventing the disaster lay in sinking the ship. Firemen, donned smoke helmets and, rushing through flic fire, reached mid opened the seacocks. The inrushing water cooled the heated plates, and tlio ship sank. The whole brigade was recommended for decoration for coolness and courage, but the four named wero selected for tlio distinction.
