CITY LOAN PROPOSALS

« '— A meeting of electors under the auspices of the Melrose Ratepayers' and Electors' Association was held on Saturday evening at Rosson's Tea Booms, to further' consider the loun'proposals and other matters. There was a good attendance, including delegate from other ratepayers' associations. , Mr. A. F. Tonka occupied the chair. Mr. W. J. Gaudin, a candidate for the vacant seat on the City Council at tho coining by-election, Vr-ns present by invitation, and addressed tho meeting. .Ho strongly supported tho whole loan proposals, i \ Messrs. Shand. Vaughan, Blako, Bayfield,, and Worth, visitors from other suburbs, also spohe, expressing their opinion that, as the city must progress, the loan in its entirety was necessary. The importnnt and essential works could not be constructed from Tevemie Messrs. Cox, Chisholm, and others supported the wholo schedule. A motion was carried; "That in tho opinion of this meeting, when a by-elec-tion for a sent on the City Council is necessary, in order to save expense the law should bo amended to' allow the candidate at the last election who was next m number of votes to the lowest elected, to automatically fill tho vacancy."
