NEW REVERSING GEAR FOR MUTOR-BOATS
An ingenious magnetic reversing goat for motor-boats has been introduced bj n lead'ag British firm of engineers. Tht shaft carries n magnet winch, when excited, attracts a flat slecl disc behiw' it and causes it to revolve, giving f di reel/ drive to the propeller. The re verse magnet is of a similar i|ype and when excited, draws the disc to tin right and holds it stationary. The oir gine drive is then transmitted I'hrougt planet wheels so as tcfl drivo the pellor in tho reverse direction. Thcsi magnetic clutches and tho eng'ino throttle valve are operated by i'Jie one lever When the fever is in the central r<wi (ion the throttle is closed and neithci of the magnets is exciitcd; therefore thi engine runs idly ai a low sjieed. Move ment of tho lever in one direction oi the other excites the ahead magnet 01 the astern magnet as tho ease may be opening the throttle and, speeding uj lilw engine at the same tirno.
