NOTES AND COMMENTS
j Br Gr/ENCOE. Entries for tho Otaki meeting close on Friday ne.it. Local owners who intend entering for the handicaps at the Avondalc meeting, should note that entricß close on Friday, at 6 p.m. Final payments for the Avondale Stakes and Avondalc Guineas are due at the Banie time. Wellington owners have; in the past, often patronised tho Aahburton meeting. This year the spring meeting of the cluh named will be held on September 23 and 24. Owners are . reminded that entries close with Secretary A. A. Forks on Monday nest, at 5 p.m. There is a. good card to he got through at Marton to-day, when Eome eight events will bo decided. The fields are rather unwieldy, which may have the effect cf cramping speculation. The Hack Hurdles is the first event on tho card, and is timed for 11.30 a.m. Wellington form .points strongly to Otauru Kid, but Hastings sportsmen will go for Hyginas, a good mud performer, who has been schooling well in private. He n to be ridden by F. Cress. There are & lot of lialf-roady horses in the Trial Hack Plate, and Mstowcl, Militaire, and Admiration may be the only ones likoly to come in for much support. G. Young is to ride the last named, bo ho will lack nothing on tho acoro of horsemanship. Olaßs. is not a strong foature of the Hack Steeplechase field, and Mattock, who Won on the same course last year, may again be prominent. Sail Home is a horeo that disappointed earlier in tho season when well fancied by his connection!, and he may do better to-day. All Over will havo a big advantage over the other runners in the Marton Handicap inasmuch as ho has been raced all the winter, so will be well seasoned. That lie goes fairly well in mud he showed at Trentham, where ho finished ,iust outside a. place in the Parliamentary Handicap, aftor an unlucky passage.
Taking a lino through tho 'Wellington Steeplechase form Foeman would seem to bo tho beat of tho lot i? flio Hongitlkci Steeplechase, but Gladful boob well in soft going, and the lighter countrv at Marton should enable him to do better than he has done lately.
Simonides is an unlikely starter in the Railway Handicap, and in his abßcnce Matatua, a good performer on this course, may go out favourite.
