A BRITISH COTTON SUBSTITUTE
Great, interest has I>eeii aroused in Great Britain by announcements concerning. a textile material called, "cotton substttuTe." It is rot,, however, a new thing, but its revival at the present time is due to the advancing price \of raw cotton. It was invented ten years agoby & British, engineer, and is a result of- a special proccss of treating "china crass." > By steeping the grass in certain chemicals, the inventor obtains a fibre which can be spun in ordinary cotton 6pinning machinery. The resulting material takes dye Tcadily. has a good lustre, and when mixed with cotton yarn produces a hard-wearing fabric. Apparently tbo only objection to it i« its hairiness and harshness, but for ccrtain purposes, these qiinlitiw would not- prove a serious'drawback: _ Experts NwWer thot its main value will be as a union fibre with cotton and.wool. ' •
