MARINE COOKS AND STEWARDS

JUDGMENTS OF ARBITRATION COURT. Judgments of the Court of Arbitration upon matters affecting tho New Zealand marine cooks and stewards were filed in tho Wellington office yesterday. The Now Zealand marine cooks and stewards (galley 6taff), working under an agreement with the Union Steam Ship Company, applied for an amendment of tho agreement. Tho Court's decision, was expressed as follows:—"In iiew of tho increases' in wages conceded in the supplementary agreement of February 7,1920, thero is no justification for asking for any further increaso by way of bonus, and tho application is therefore dismissed."

Tho New Zealand marine cooks and stewards applied for an amendment of their award. Tho Court decided in this caso also that in view of increases in pay recently conceded to the union, the application should be dismissed. With regard to uniforms, the Court has issued tho following order amending the above-mentioned award: "Members eff the stewards' staff shall provide themselves with, and wear on duty, the uniform (if any) of the in which they are employed." Tho Court was asked certain questions regarding interpretation of the award. Ono of these was: "Where tho employer elects to glvo the two days' holiday (provided for in clause 23) is it obligatory upon tho employer to allow the time off at the home port?" The answer was In the negativn.

Tho Arbitration Court's award in tho tailoring trade fixes the hours of work at U per week after January 1. _ The minimum wages are:—For, males, including presscrs, £1 10s., plus ss. bonus; for females. ,£2 10s. per week for tho first six months after completion of apprenticeship, and thereafter not less than £2 ss. plus ss. bonus. Piecework is to bo paid for at tho rate of Is. i\<l, in hour for males, and lid. for females.
