INCREASED WAGES FOR GREATER OUTPUT
By Toleßrarn—Preße Assoolation—Copyright London, August 29. It is generally bolifcvcd thuti the coal strike will not eventuate, but that mediation will result in tho resumption of negotiations balweeu thel Government and tile minora' leaders. A compromise may be arranged on a- basis of increased wages for an increased output of coal. Although the mines nro employing 100,000 more, workers than before tho war, the annual output is- 58 million tons less, and the high wages, combined with iflio reduced output, are making coal dear. It is reported from Blvth that th* miners' leaders are considering a proposal to call off the projected strike, and to restrict tho work fo four days, until the accumulated stocks in the country aro exhausted. It is estimated thnii over 100,000 pitboys voted in the miners' ballot. This is an nnpreeedentod feature of such a ballot.—Aus.-N.Z. > Cable Assn.
