SHORT DELIVERED CARGO
INCREASE IN SHIP'S LIABILITY.
The secretary of the Wellington Chamber' of Commerce (Mr. H. D. Vickery) recently wrote to the general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, pointing out that the overseas shipping companies trading between tho United Kingdom and New Zealand had increased the limit of their liability in respect to short-delivered cargo (on bills of lading) from £5 to ,£lO per cubic foot, and from .£IOO to .£2OO per package. - He asked that the Union Company also consider favourably an increase of tho limit of liability. Tn reply the general manager (Mr. u. A. Aiken) wrote as follows:-"We note your inquiry as to the limitation of 'liability for cargo short-delivered in bills of lading used in our intercolonial «ervice. Up till a. short time ago our limit was .£5 per foot, with a maximum of ,£SO in respect, of any one package, but wo have much pleasure in advising you that last month it was decided to double the extent of our liability, and this accordingly now stands at £10 per cubic foot, with a maximum of ,£IOO in respect of any one package."
