WRECK ON SLIPPER ISLAND
NAUTICAL INQUIRY OPENED. By Teloeraoh—Preai Association. Auckland, August 30. A nautical inquiry whs held to-dny at tho Magistrate's Court into the wreck of the auxiliary schooner Te Teko on Slipper Island on August 0. Mr. M'Kean, S.M., presided, the assessors Tjeing Captain Eeid and Captain Caspar. The facts -were stated to be that on the night of August 6 the To Teko was on her way from Whakatano to Auckland, ami when passing Mayor Island encountered a heavy N.E. gale, with thick weather. About 8 p.m. she struck the reef to tho S;B. of Slipper Island and became a total wreck, Joseph Gobie, A.8., being lost. Tho points referred to the Court to decide were—(l) What was the cause of tho wreck? (2) Whether it was due or contributed to by negligence, wrongful act, default, or want ot supervision ? (3) Was the ship seaworthy, and fully manned at the time? Edward Sellers, master of tho To Teko, accounted for the striking on Slipper Island by suggesting some strong "set" on tho coast. He had not found anything wrong with the steering of tho To Teko. Counsel: To go to leeward four miles 'in 23 seems pretty bad. _ Witness: Yes, I was afraid to mako my course too northerly lest I should get lob close to Alderman Island. I thought thcro was sufficient centre-board down la check tho drift to leoward. After further evidence had been heard tho inquiry was adjourned until tomorrow.
