WELLINGTON SOUTH V. WORKING KEN'S CLUB. The fifteenth annual match between the above clubs was got ofi very successfully on Saturday evening at the rooms of th Working Men's Club. Very complete arrangements were made by l os s. E.fI'iulayson (general manager), A. Uait (chairman for chess and draughts), and S. Faulknor (lion, secretary), and there was a large attendance of players. Mr T. Norris (president) accorded a hiaity welcome to tlie visitors, andM'ii formally declaring the match open took occasion to express the pleasure ami mi toil m seeing a lady (Mrs. Gyles) taking part for the first time in the history of this old fixture. (Aprtause.). Wellington South won tho toss, auu n<;u first move at the odd-n'umbered boards. At I lie adjournment for refreshments each side had notched four wii.e. On resuming, the visitors added six more wins in quick succcssion, mostly at the lower boards. Tlie'u the home team stemmed the advers" tide with wins by J. Held (who made a fino recovery after oping a pawn down), w. Whitehead (who enhanced his reputation as a most consistent winner), W. Wring and Kelling (who had the worst of tho middle-game, but finally regained his lost piece, and was two pawns up at tho finish). The last game to finish was at Board 1, where Barnes, with lone eye on the last Hataitai tram, made, a hurried move that cost him a rook and lost him a game that looked like a draw only a moment, before. At the conclusion of the match, 3[r. W. Berry (president) returned thanks for the kindnesses and hospitality extended to tho Wellington South players. It may Oe mentioned that this fixture dates back to 1905, the year in which the Wellington South Club was formed. The Working Jlen's Club h*s won on eight occasions,' viz., 1905, 1910, 1913, 1914. 1915, 1917, 1918, and 19>. while the South WeUingtoniami have been successful six times, viz., in. 1906, IMB. 1911, 1912, 1916. and 1920. The 1907 fixture ended in a tie. No match was played in 1909. These clubs also met in the last round of the Masterton Ohess Rally (Easter, 1919), when tho Working lltus Club was successful (3-0).

THE WELLINGTON CLUB. Tho outstanding feature of last week's play in this club was tlie success of —

W. Gyies in oapturing rung 2 of tho ladder from W. E. Mason (the New Zealand champion), the final tally being 2J—l4 in favour of the challenger Gyles, who is ill raro form at present, and has now issued a challenge to li. J. Barnes for rung 1 (tho club championship). Tills contest is expeotod to produce a great struggle for supremacy.
